There is no single warning light for your air ducts. These five signs are worth paying attention to. On their own they do not prove that your ducts need cleaning, but they are good reasons to take a closer look.
- Visible dust or debris around vents. Dust collecting on or around the registers can be a sign of buildup further in.
- Airflow that seems weaker than usual. A blocked filter, a closed damper or another HVAC issue can also cause this, so check those first.
- Persistent, unusual odors. Musty or stale smells deserve investigation. Some odors come from other sources, so do not ignore a smell that could be a safety issue.
- Dust that keeps returning. If dust settles again soon after cleaning, it is worth checking your filter and ducts.
- Visible buildup inside accessible ductwork. Remove a vent cover and look inside with a flashlight. Heavy buildup may justify a professional cleaning.
